JOHNNY JAMES – Alto & Soprano Saxophone

Like his fellow Florida A&M University alumnus, the legendary Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley, Johnny James was tremendously influenced by his college experiences in the celebrated FAMU Marching Band – known internationally as the Marching 100. Proficiency on alto sax was an early childhood goal, which Johnny dedicated himself to exclusively, finding his voice on the instrument before moving on to his present equal mastery of the soprano – a love born of his discipleship of the pioneering work of Grover Washington, Jr. In the tradition of these two giants, Johnny James has a sound all his own. Honest and genuine. Skillful technique combined with a sweet sexy style. Also known as ‘Dr. J,’ this colorful, versatile musician has released two solo projects in the cool jazz genre, and is a former member of the pop group Will To Power.

Johnny James was born in Tallahassee, Florida. At an early age, he moved to Rochester, NY where his interest and love for music blossomed. Johnny’s natural ability and musical fascination began to be cultivated by age six, after his family moved near the Eastman School of Music, the Conservatory where several of his mentors studied.

James was introduced to old Jazz recordings and style, and developed his talent through private piano instruction. It didn’t take long however for him to find his life's passion – the Saxophone. After moving back to Tallahassee, under the influence of Adderley, his long time idol, Johnny earned a musical scholarship to Florida A&M. During his college years, Johnny James shared his talent and magnetic personality on stages with the finest area musicians while continuing his education and completing his degree. James played with Darryl Tookes in a number of local bands, and the two formed a life long friendship. Sacred marriage. Reunited on The Journey To The Hieros Gamos.
