MARK BEVERLEY – Bass
Mark Curtis Beverley was born and raised in Miami, Florida. After attending Miami Dade College, Mark received a scholarship to the University of Miami, where he majored in Jazz Performance, and earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Currently Mark resides in South Florida and performs regularly on both upright and electric bass, in a wide variety of musical settings. He is comfortable playing in many different styles including Jazz, R&B, Funk, Gospel, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Classical and Pop. Mark has performed with notable artists such as Eliane Elias, Kevin Mahogany, Lisa Kemp and Carmen Lundy. He also is the recipient of a Down Beat award in 2003.
An unconventional approach to bass playing, Mark was initially self-taught, with a focus on utilizing the upright bass in non-traditional manner. Not wanting to be tied down to the typical expectations of an acoustic bass and it’s limitations, Mark forged a new style in a direction all his own. A method of his own creation. Upon mastering this personal art form, Beverley returned to the formal study of music to continue his mission of becoming a perfectly well rounded bassist. With classical training under his belt, he returned to his experimental roots.
As if by magic, a chance encounter with Rolando Grooscors in a music store led to Mark’s introduction to the Darryl Tookes Band. The timing was fortuitous, as he has emerged with heartfelt, soulful playing.
