ROLANDO GROOSCORS – Guitar
Rolando Grooscors was born in Caracas, Venezuela. At age ten he started to play the typical Venezuelan stringed instrument called the “cuatro,” before discovering the Spanish guitar or “Nylon string" guitar, as it is also known.
From very young Rolando was influenced by different types of music. Latin, Brazilian, Jazz and Flamenco. These and many other styles contribute to the versatility he displays today. When Rolando was fourteen years old, he moved to Canada where he lived in both Toronto and Ottawa. It was there that he studied classical guitar. Captivated by flamenco guitar, Rolando also took classes with Professor Leopoldo Martí Aguilar for two years. After which time the duo of Grooscors and his teacher began performing together at different universities and cultural venues in Canada. At seventeen years old, Rolando discovered the electric guitar, performed with several rock groups, and began experimenting with fusion jazz. A path the he continues to this day.
Rolando’s love of Brazilian music motivated him to develop a Jazz/Fusion style heavily influenced by that most passionate expression, infused with Latin and Jazz. Presently he is one of the most in demand guitar players in Miami, and recently completed his first CD “Reflejos” (Reflections). On this recording he displays a wide variety of styles and concepts. Rolando Grooscors’ harmonic and melodic imagery capture the essence of musical freedom, spirit and sensuality. For the Darryl Tookes Band, Rolando’s lines - which were all performed live in the studio recording – are dreamy memorable signatures, evoking the sacred marriage, the Hieros Gamos. His guitar playing is on another level. Yet on this higher plane, Rolando’s soulful, creative, twelve-tone improvisatory style is always completely accessible, and joyous.
